This year, I had my students create something from recyclable materials. Our school has been working on a sustainability initiative, and I thought it would be a fun project. The assignment was to make a toy, instrument, art project, or something useful using stuff around the house.
The kids came up with some great creations! One student brought in a cereal box guitar. Another, a multi-media art piece. A favorite was the "ball in a cup" toy. One fifth grader discovered his box transformer made an excellent drum, in addition to converting from a robot to a tank. Two students created bird feeders that we hung in a tree outside our school. One of the students made a projectile jet using cardboard, duct tape, and rubber bands. Some other items included a bottle piggy bank, a mini-video game, maracas, and a snowman decoration. All the projects were impressive!
Since chess is part of our free time in class, my personal project was to create a chess set out of recyclable bottles. Now, students often use this set to play!
Conscientious as well as creative, my students will be acting as ambassadors for our school's recycling program this week. Besides collecting the recyclables, we hope to bring awareness to our students and families. Recycling is a good way to reduce our use of natural resources and care for the environment.
